4 Reasons Why Title And Registration Is Important

My name is Shane Donahue. A couple of years ago, I almost had a financial disaster. I had a car accident and I simply assumed that I was at fault. This would have left me responsible for paying for the repairs needed for my car, which I needed to go to work. What I didn't realize was that I was actually not at fault. The weather conditions and the actions I took while driving my vehicle lead to me not having to pay for the damages done to my vehicle. This caused me to make sure that I would never be uninformed about my insurance policy again and I have since devoted myself to a blog focused on insurance.

When it comes to being a vehicle owner, the process requires a lot more than heading to the dealer, finding a car you like and driving off the lot. You also need to secure a title and properly register your vehicle. If you haven't thought about these processes yet, it's important that you do now. Here are just some of the reasons why these steps are so important.

It's Illegal

The first thing to remember is that the vehicle title and registration process is a legal requirement. If a car is not properly titled or registered, and you're driving the car, make certain you understand that you are doing so illegally. If you don't have these documents for a vehicle you already own, immediately stop driving the car and handle whatever roadblocks are preventing you from completing these processes.

Proves Ownership

Another reason why title and registration are important for car ownership is the fact that it proves you are the said owner. Without this documentation, crazy as it sounds, any person could literally claim ownership of your vehicle. Registration is basically a record process that you complete with the state to create a record of legal proof that you are the owner of the vehicle. If you try to sell the vehicle in the future, you won't be able to do so without this documentation.

Auto Loan

If you find a used vehicle that you like, you will once again discover the importance of the title and registration process. If you need to secure a loan for the car, the lending company will require that the vehicle have a legal title. In addition to proving who the owner of the vehicle is, a title will also provide details about the condition of the vehicle, such as whether or not it was in an accident or flooded. If there is no title, you won't be able to secure a loan for the vehicle.

Proper Licensing

The title and registration process are also important for licensing your vehicle. Just as a lender won't secure a loan for a vehicle without a title, the state will also not license a vehicle that doesn't have a title. If you're unable to license a vehicle, you won't be able to drive the vehicle, and you likely also will be unable to have it insured, so make sure you take care of this step.

Make sure you aren't overlooking these steps to secure and protect your vehicle.
